Jack Goodsir was born out of wedlock in possibly the smallest town in England. His mother, Annabella Goodsir, was the mistress of an Admiral, and upon her falling pregnant he tried every way imaginable to "get rid" of her. Rather than allow the man to threaten the life of her and her child, Annabella retreated into rural England and tried to hide her child from the world....Her attempts were futile, however. Jack's birth was a curse, and Annabella paid for his life with her own. Jack was found by an older pair of Scottish immigrants, who raised him before their own death when he was 10.Lost, alone, and with nobody in the country knowing of his existence, the young boy became a bit of a nomad. He found his way around England, teaching himself to hunt and survive by an means necessary, before he landed in London. By that time, he was about... fourteen, and developing in the opposite way as he would have liked. The men in London were terrible. They pawed at him like some free-use doxy. But they offered something that he didn't have, something that he needed: money. Jack was a prostitute between the ages of 15 and 20, before he escaped London and took his life into his own hands. He transitioned in secrecy, haunting Europe in search of his identity.He returned to England at the age of 26. While idly mingling in a pub, he was approached by a group of rough-around-the-edges sailors — the press-gang. After a bit of roughhousing, Jack was enlisted into the Royal Navy, on board the HMS Sovereign. At first, it was horrid. Dank, musty conditions, cramped into a tiny frigate full of men. But the moment he returned ashore, he found himself longing for the sea.Goodsir enlisted himself into the Navy formally at age 27. He was a bit old for a midshipman, but they let him in. They needed the bodies, after all. He quickly proved himself to be a capable and competent sailor, and eventually he earned his certifications for officership and, by age 37, he was serving as a lieutenant on board vessels.
